Megan Kirk, Behavior & Wellness Coordinator for Vigo County School Corporation, Honored as IYI’s D. Susan Wisely Youth Worker of the Year Award
Indianapolis IN, [November 15, 2023] — Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) is excited to announce Dr. Megan Kirk, Behavior & Wellness Coordinator for the Vigo County School Corporation, as the recipient of IYI’s 2023 D. Susan Wisely Youth Worker of the Year Award. This annual award was established in 2014 to honor the legacy of D. Susan Wisely and celebrate the far-reaching efforts of youth workers throughout Indiana.
Kirk stands out among her peers for her exceptional dedication to the well-being and development of Indiana’s children and youth. Kirk spearheaded the grant application for Project AWARE, securing vital funding for mental health services in Vigo County Schools. Amidst the challenges of the Covid pandemic, this program played a crucial role in safeguarding the well-being of students in Vigo County. Kirk’s dedication extends to actively participating in Vigo County’s Juvenile Drug Court and Juvenile Probation programs, ensuring comprehensive mental health support for justice-involved juveniles. Additionally, she collaborates with leaders in the Recovery Community to bring essential programming and substance use disorder treatment to the area, particularly focusing on youth experiencing such challenges.
“Awardees, like Dr. Megan Kirk, embody qualities of mentorship, trust-building, integrity, and a profound commitment to results and effective practices,” said Tami Silverman, President & CEO of Indiana Youth Institute. “Megan’s dedication extends to fostering equitable opportunities for all children, embracing diversity, and creating a positive impact in Vigo County.”
Her commitment aligns seamlessly with the values and principles championed by D. Susan Wisely, who spent her career advocating for the welfare of Indiana’s youth workers.
“In the pursuit of effective performance and leadership, I hold high standards and expectations for youth,” said Kirk. “By instilling a belief in their potential and challenging them to go beyond their comfort zones, I aim to inspire excellence and encourage them to achieve their best. I provide guidance, mentorship, and constructive feedback when necessary, supporting their growth and offering resources to enhance their skills.”
The award is named in honor of D. Susan Wisely, an influential figure who spearheaded the development of numerous youth service-related programs during her tenure at Lilly Endowment, Inc., including the prestigious Lilly Fellows.
