Improving School Attendance

School attendance is improving in Indiana but the challenge isn’t over.

In 2025, more than one in six Hoosier students missed at least 18 days of school. That’s enough to be considered chronically absent.

Students who miss too much school are far less likely to read on grade level, pass math, or graduate ready for what comes next.

Attendance means opportunity. Parents, caregivers, educators, coaches, employers, and neighbors all play a role.

You can help by talking about the importance of everyday attendance, helping families overcome barriers like transportation or health care, and reaching out early when a child starts missing school.
