Lost Opportunities How Disparate School Discipline Continues to Drive Differences in the Opportunity to Learn

Summary

This report is the first to capture the full impact from differences in use of out-of-school suspensions at the state and district levels. Research documenting the harms from suspension has increased the awareness of educators and policymakers of the harmful consequences children experience when we suspend them from school. The hardships all students are experiencing during the pandemic, including some degree of suspended education, might add to this awareness. Although some may still regard suspending students from school to be a relatively harmless punishment, research indicates that the lost instruction can profoundly impact achievement in the short term.
